Website Design & Local SEO for Aurora Businesses
The Affordable Web Guy builds websites and runs local SEO for small businesses in Aurora.
Aurora breaks a lot of standard local SEO advice, and the reason is size. The city covers about 164 square miles. That’s the second-largest footprint of any city in Colorado, bigger than Denver’s, spread across three separate counties. It’s third in the state by population but second by land area, which tells you the density is thin and the distances are long.
That combination causes a specific problem most Aurora business owners run into without knowing what’s happening.
Ranking “In Aurora” Doesn’t Mean What You Think
Proximity is one of the strongest factors in local search. When someone searches for a service, Google weighs where that person’s phone is right now against where it thinks your business is. In a compact city, that’s fine — everybody’s close to everybody.
Aurora is not a compact city.
A business near the Anschutz Medical Campus sits in the far northwest corner, practically touching Denver. A business at Southlands sits in the far southeast, closer to Parker than to Anschutz. They’re at opposite ends of a 164-square-mile city. Someone standing in one of those places searching for a plumber is not going to be shown a plumber standing in the other one.
So you can hold the top spot for “Aurora [your service]” and still be invisible to most of Aurora. Owners see the ranking report, see a #1, and can’t work out why the phone isn’t ringing. The ranking is real. It just only applies to a radius around wherever Google thinks you are.
What actually works here is giving up on “Aurora” as a single target. The city breaks into distinct areas that behave like separate markets:
- Northwest — Anschutz, Fitzsimons, Stapleton edge, Colfax and Peoria. Dense, medical, adjacent to Denver, heavy commuter traffic.
- Central — Havana Street, Centretech, the Aurora Municipal Center area, along I-225. The city’s older commercial core, long-established businesses.
- Southeast — Southlands, Smoky Hill, Tower Road, out toward E-470. Newer subdivisions, retail-driven, growing.
- North — Montbello edge, Green Valley Ranch side, near the airport corridor along I-70. Industrial and logistics mixed with residential.
Content that names those places, and a Google Business Profile with a service area drawn to match where you actually go, will do more than another round of “Aurora” keyword tuning.
Three Counties, One City
Aurora sits in Adams, Arapahoe, and Douglas counties. Most of it is Arapahoe — about 336,000 residents at the 2020 census, against roughly 47,700 in Adams and only about 2,500 in Douglas. Arapahoe County’s seat is Littleton, not Aurora, even though Aurora is the county’s largest city.
Almost nobody outside the city knows this, and it produces a few practical wrinkles.
Your customers don’t all describe their location the same way. Some say Aurora. Some say Arapahoe County. Some on the north end say Adams County, and a handful in the southern sliver say Douglas. If your site only ever says “Aurora,” you’re missing the way a slice of your market talks about where they live.
There’s also a business-side effect. Depending on which county line you’re on, licensing, permitting, and tax jurisdiction can differ, and so do the school districts — which matters more than you’d think if you’re marketing to families. I’m not going to give you licensing advice; that’s a question for the city and your county. But your website should reflect the counties you actually serve, and your schema markup should say so plainly enough that a search engine can resolve it without guessing.
The Anschutz Effect
The northwest corner of Aurora has something no other Denver suburb has. The Anschutz Medical Campus and the adjacent Fitzsimons Innovation Community sit on ground that used to be Fitzsimons Army Hospital — originally a World War I facility for soldiers with tuberculosis, named for the first U.S. Army officer killed in that war. The Army closed it in 1996. In the early 90s it employed about 1,500 people and was Aurora’s largest employer.
Today the campus runs two hospital partners, six schools, more than a dozen clinics, and 60-plus health science centers and institutes across roughly 256 acres. In 2025 CU Anschutz reported contributing $5.7 billion to Colorado’s economy and supporting 27,400 jobs.
For a small business in Aurora, that concentration changes the math in two ways.
If you sell to that ecosystem — professional services, specialty trades, staffing, IT, anything B2B — your buyers are institutional. They will look at your website and judge whether you’re a real company before they’ll take a meeting. A site that looks like a hobby project loses those conversations before they start.
And if you’re a medical or dental practice competing anywhere near that corner, you’re being compared against organizations with communications departments. That doesn’t mean you need their budget. It does mean your site has to load fast, work properly on a phone, handle patient forms without breaking, and meet accessibility expectations that healthcare gets held to more strictly than most industries. I build for practices, and that’s a different job than building for a landscaper.
Where I Work
There’s no office to visit here. The Affordable Web Guy operates as a service area business, which means I travel to your location or we handle the meeting over video.
Core coverage across the east and central metro: Aurora, Denver, Centennial, Greenwood Village, Englewood, and Littleton. Wider coverage reaches Lakewood, Arvada, Thornton, Westminster, Broomfield, Highlands Ranch, Parker, and Commerce City.
Let’s Talk About Your Aurora Business
Send me the URL and I’ll give you a straight read on whether the problem calls for a rebuild or just a fix. There’s a decent chance the site itself is fine and what’s actually costing you calls is a service area drawn wrong on your Google Business Profile. If that’s the answer, that’s what I’ll say — selling you a build you don’t need isn’t worth the referral I’d lose.
